What are Environmental Product Declarations – and why do they matter?

Sustainability at Fletcher Insulation isn’t just a goal — it’s embedded in how we design, manufacture, and innovate. That’s why we proudly back our Australian made glasswool insulation with independently verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

But what exactly is an EPD — and why should it matter to builders, architects, specifiers and homeowners?

What is an EPD?

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a publicly available, third-party verified document that transparently communicates the environmental impacts of a product over its lifecycle. Think of it like a nutrition label — but instead of calories and ingredients, it lists the carbon footprint, resource use, and other environmental data of a product.

An EPD is based on international standards (ISO 14025 and EN 15804), and includes detailed data on:

  • Raw material sourcing
  • Manufacturing impacts
  • Energy and water use
  • Transport
  • Use phase performance
  • End-of-life recyclability or disposal

Fletcher Insulation’s EPDs offer trusted insight into how our glasswool products perform across their full lifecycle — from recycled inputs through to end-of-life outcomes.

Why EPDs are important

EPDs allow our customers to make informed, environmentally responsible decisions. For architects, designers and builders, EPDs are especially valuable tools to:

  • Support Green Star, WELL and NABERS ratings
EPDs can contribute points under major Australian green building certifications, helping deliver better-performing, lower-impact buildings.
  • Meet government and commercial sustainability requirements
Many projects — including infrastructure, education, healthcare, and government buildings — now require materials with verified environmental credentials.
  • Enable lifecycle assessments and carbon accounting
Transparent data in EPDs supports more accurate assessments of embodied carbon and total building performance.

What EPDs say about our glasswool insulation products

Our EPDs show that our Australian made glasswool insulation products:

  • use over 72% recycled glass, sourced locally
  • are manufactured using our next-generation bio-based binder, with no added formaldehyde
  • help reduce a building’s energy use and carbon footprint for decades after installation
  • are durable, non-combustible and safe to handle

In short, they’re built for long-term performance — with sustainability that’s independently verified.

Why this matters to homeowners too

Even if you’re not designing a multi-million dollar building, our EPDs give you confidence that the insulation you choose is:

  • Safer and healthier for your home
  • Manufactured in Australia, supporting local jobs and reducing transport emissions
  • Helping reduce your energy bills, while lowering your carbon footprint

We’re committed to transparency and improvement

Fletcher Insulation sees EPDs as more than just third-party verification — they’re a reflection of our commitment to sustainability, transparency, and continuous improvement across every aspect of our business.
