Behind the scenes with Mitchell Cavanagh: Turning technical complexity into practical guidance

As building performance requirements continue to evolve, selecting the right insulation solution can involve much more than choosing an R-value.

For Fletcher Insulation Technical Manager Mitchell Cavanagh, helping customers, architects, specifiers and builders navigate that complexity is an important part of his role.

From technical enquiries and product testing to training and product development, Mitchell works across a broad range of areas to help ensure insulation products and systems meet performance requirements and can be applied with confidence.

“Whether working with architects, specifiers, builders or customers, the goal is to provide clear, actionable guidance that helps them make informed decisions with confidence,” Mitchell says.

That often means working collaboratively with external project teams to understand what they are trying to achieve and help identify a practical way forward.

Looking beyond the R-value

While insulation can appear relatively straightforward, Mitchell says achieving the required building performance involves considering how different elements work together.

“Selecting the right solution involves more than just choosing an R-value. Technical expertise helps ensure the insulation system delivers the required thermal, acoustic, fire and moisture performance while meeting compliance requirements.”

It can also help identify potential issues such as condensation, thermal bridging and installation challenges before they become costly problems.

Considering insulation as part of the complete building system is therefore critical.

“Insulation needs to be considered as part of the complete building system,” Mitchell says. “Insulation, membranes and other building elements each play different roles in achieving the required thermal, acoustic and fire performance, as well as managing condensation risk.

“Looking at individual elements in isolation can negatively impact the overall performance of the building.”

Responding to changing building requirements

Changes to the National Construction Code (NCC) have also increased the level of consideration required when designing building envelopes.

For Mitchell, one of the most significant developments has been the introduction of requirements to account for thermal bridging in NCC Volume One.

“This requires a lot more thought around the envelope design of buildings to meet compliance, rather than simply adding insulation to achieve the required performance,” he says.

It’s an example of why technical knowledge increasingly needs to extend beyond individual products to understanding how insulation performs as part of a complete construction system.

Sharing technical knowledge

Mitchell’s role also involves working closely with teams across Fletcher Insulation.

The Technical team supports sales and specification with technical enquiries and works with Fletcher Insulation’s laboratory and manufacturing teams on the development and testing of new and existing products.

Sharing that knowledge beyond the business is another important part of Mitchell’s role through technical presentations and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) sessions.

“Helping people understand what I understand is really rewarding and can have a positive impact on the building industry,” he says.

“I hope attendees can take away the knowledge I’ve shared and apply it to their projects with greater understanding.”

Building performance into the future

Looking ahead, Mitchell expects energy efficiency, condensation management, indoor comfort and resilience to more extreme weather conditions to become increasingly important considerations for Australian buildings.

“As building standards continue to evolve and expectations around sustainability increase, there will be a growing focus on creating buildings that are comfortable, healthy and energy-efficient throughout their lifespan.”

Environmental considerations also extend to the materials used to achieve that performance. Fletcher Insulation’s Australian-made glasswool is manufactured using up to 80% recycled content, including post-consumer glass, across products such as Pink® Batts®, Soundbreak®, Pink® Partition and FirmaSoft®.

Together with the role insulation can play in improving the energy efficiency of buildings, this reinforces the importance of considering both building performance and the materials used to achieve it.

For Mitchell, it’s the opportunity to help turn complex requirements into practical solutions that makes his role particularly rewarding.

“Every project is different, so it’s satisfying to work with architects, specifiers, builders and customers to provide practical advice that balances performance, compliance and constructability.

“I also enjoy sharing technical knowledge and helping people make informed decisions.”
